Side effects | Voltaren resinate

Side effects

As with any drug, certain side effects can occur when taking Voltaren Resinat®. The diclofenac-inhibited enzyme called cyclooxygenase is also localized in the stomach lining, among other things. There, the prostaglandins produced by this enzyme protect against the destructive power of stomach acid.

However, since the production of these prostaglandins is reduced by Voltaren Resinat®/Diclofenac, the balance can be upset and the acid can become harmful. For this reason, Voltaren Resinat® (just like all other cyclooxygenase inhibitors) often leads to side effects in the gastrointestinal tract. These include, among others: If you experience severe pain in the upper abdomen or blood in the stool (which sometimes looks tarry), you should stop taking Voltaren Resinat® capsules and see a doctor as soon as possible.

Disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) such as dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, fatigue or excitement can also occur. Therefore, it is not recommended to actively participate in road traffic or operate heavy machinery after taking Voltaren Resinat®. Relatively often, taking Voltaren Resinat® also leads to hypersensitivity reactions of the body such as itching or rashes on the skin. More rarely, Voltaren Resinat® may also cause other side effects, including hair loss, blood formation and clotting disorders, kidney or liver damage, psychotic reactions or depression.

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach Ulcers
  • Gastric bleeding
  • Flatulence or inflammation of the stomach lining.

Interactions

  • To date, no interactions between Voltaren resinat® and the contraceptive pill have been described, i.e. no increase or decrease in the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill is to be expected from Voltaren resinat®. Despite this, you should always inform your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines, including non-prescription preparations.
  • The simultaneous intake of Voltaren resinat® and digoxin, a preparation used to increase the strength of the heart, can increase the effectiveness of digoxin, as its concentration in the blood increases.
  • The effect of Phenytoin, a drug for the treatment of seizures, and lithium, which is used, for example, in depression, can also be enhanced when taken simultaneously with Voltaren resinat®. Thus, the lithium level in the blood must be controlled when taken together with Voltaren resinat®. Control of serum digoxin and serum phenytoin levels is also recommended.
  • When taking medications that delay blood clotting (so-called blood thinners), such as warfarin, this effect can also be enhanced when taken together with Voltaren resinat®.
  • When taking dehydrating (diuretics) and antihypertensive drugs together with Voltaren resinat®, the effect of these drugs can be reduced.
  • An increased risk of renal dysfunction when used in combination with ACE inhibitors, which are used for heart failure and high blood pressure, is known.
  • The combined use of Voltaren resinat® with certain dehydrating agents (potassium-sparing diuretics) can trigger an increase in the blood potassium level.
  • The risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding is increased with additional intake of preparations that also belong to the group of non-steroidal anti-rheumatic drugs (NSAIDs) or glucocorticoids.
  • Simultaneous administration of Voltaren resinat® and antiplatelet aggregation inhibitors, such as acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) or certain antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors/SSRI) may also increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • If Voltaren resinat® is taken within 24 hours before or after the administration of the cytostatic and antirheumatic drug methotrexate, it can lead to an increase in the adverse drug effects of methotrexate.
  • When taking Ciclospoprin A, a drug that is preferably used after transplantation to prevent graft rejection, the kidney-damaging effect of Ciclosporin is increased when used together with Voltaren resinat®.
  • Adverse drug effects of Voltaren resinat® may be increased when taking Probenecid or sulfin pyrazone, which are used to treat gout, at the same time, as these slow down the excretion of Voltaren resinat® from the human body and it therefore accumulates in the body for longer.
  • In some cases, the blood sugar level can be influenced when taking blood sugar-lowering medication and Voltaren resinat®, so it should be checked regularly to be on the safe side.
