Side effects | Zovirax

Side effects

Overall, Zovirax is a well tolerated drug. Very high doses (as an injection) and rapid administration, as well as in the case of pre-damaged kidneys, can lead to impairment of kidney function. This can occur mainly due to crystallization of the drug during excretion with urine.

It is therefore advisable to drink a lot of liquid with and after taking the medication to support the work of the kidneys. If the kidneys are already damaged, the doctor should check the administration carefully and, if necessary, reduce the dose and extend the time intervals between doses.Accidental spraying next to a vessel may cause inflammation. Other side effects mainly affect the digestive system: nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

A skin rash may occur. Temporary increases in liver values and slight changes in blood count with anemia may occur. In very serious cases, especially meningitis, hallucinations and seizures may also occur in rare cases.

Special patient groups

The use of Zovirax may also be necessary in children. For them the dose should be adjusted to the weight. During pregnancy the prescription should be especially well considered.

However, there is no indication of an increased risk of harm to the mother or the unborn child. Treatment of herpes infections can be useful during pregnancy to prevent infection of the child. Also the so-called genital herpes should be treated before birth or an outbreak should be prevented to prevent an infection of the child during birth. Since the medication is passed on to the newborn baby during breastfeeding, weaning should be considered.

Contraindications / contraindications

Aciclovir should not be taken in case of previous severe allergic reactions to Aciclovir or Valaciclovir (a precursor that is converted to Aciclovir in the body).

Precautions

Special precautions apply during pregnancy and lactation. When using skin cream, care should be taken to avoid contact with mucous membranes such as the mouth, vagina or eye. Zovirax, especially in tablet and systemic administration via the vein, should always be taken with as much liquid as possible to prevent damage to the kidney.
