Silicone Patch

Products

Silicone plasters are available in pharmacies and drugstores from various suppliers in different sizes (e.g., Cica-Care, Mepiform). They have been used since the 1980s. Scar gels with silicone gel (Dermatix) are also used.

Structure and properties

Silicone plasters are transparent, soft, semiocclusive, and elastic plasters composed of silicone gel.

Effects

Silicone patches can improve the appearance of scars after several months of treatment (2-4 months). Initial results are visible after about one month. The patches can also be used preventively on closed wounds. Effects are attributed to occlusion and increased hydration, among other factors.

Indications

For the external treatment of new or older raised and reddened scars and keloids.

Dosage

According to the directions for use. Silicone patches are usually self-adhesive and can be cut to the appropriate size. The patch is applied directly to the scar, with a margin of about one-half to one centimeter. If necessary, it can be held in place even more firmly with a secondary bandage. If the scar is larger than the patch, several patches can be combined. However, they should not overlap, but should be stuck next to each other. The treatment is started gradually. Finally, the patch is worn for 24 hours. The duration of therapy is 2 to 4 months. Reusable silicone patches are cleaned daily with a non-greasy soap solution and blotted dry. They can be used for about 2 to 4 weeks. The patches can also be worn while showering.
