Silymarin (Milk Thistle Fruit Extract): Safety Evaluation

No adverse effects have been reported in clinical intervention studies conducted to date. In animal studies, oral intake of a maximum of 2,500 to 5,000 mg/kg silymarin has been shown to be nontoxic and symptom-free. Caution should be exercised in cases of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient and other plants of the genus Asteraceae (or Compositae; daisy family) In the absence of adequate data regarding safety and efficacy, silymarin should not be taken by pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
