Skin Abscess, Boil and Carbuncle: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that can be caused by skin abscesses, boils, and carbuncles:

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

  • Orbitaphlegmon – diffuse inflammation of orbital tissues; may occur with a facial boil.

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Furunculosis – frequent repetitive occurrence of boils.
  • Carbuncle – inflammation of several hair follicles and their surroundings; often in the area of the neck.
  • Logen abscess (abscess that continues to spread along anatomical clefts (logens)).

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Meningitis (meningitis) – may occur with a facial boil.
  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Septic sinus cavernosus thrombosis – life-threatening condition associated primarily with impaired consciousness and fever; may occur with a facial boil.
