Skin Abscess, Boil and Carbuncle: Therapy

General Measures

  • A boil should not be tampered with!
  • The affected area of the body should be immobilized
  • In the case of an incipient boil, the application of ichthyol can promote purulent fusion
  • If an abscess cavity (pus cavity) is present, it should be drained by a doctor with a stab incision (making an incision with a scalpel) and a drainage (drainage or suction of pathological or increased body fluids) should be placed. This usually leads to healing within one to two weeks. Note: A boil on the face should not be opened.
  • After that, antiseptic therapy (means to prevent wound infection) should be performed (see below Drug therapy).
  • If the boil is located on the face, bed rest should be observed; furthermore, soft food should be prescribed
