Skin rash on thigh

Definition

A skin rash on the thigh can affect both the extensor and flexor sides. A thigh can be affected or it can occur on both sides. Strictly speaking, a rash is a generalized sowing of uniform skin changes, for example spots (so-called “maculae”). This means that the skin changes affect a large part of the skin. In colloquial language, however, other types of skin changes and localized eczema are also often equated with the term rash.

Causes of a skin rash on the thigh

Various diseases can lead to skin changes on the thigh. There are skin rashes that are limited to one or both thighs as well as those that also affect other parts of the body. A localized rash can, for example, indicate a contact allergy.

Typically, all areas of the body that come into contact with the substance causing the allergy are affected. Especially occupational groups that work with chemicals, paints or building materials can show such toxic or allergic eczema. Such eczema occurs abruptly after repeated contact with the substance and leads to redness, blisters, dry and irritated skin.

You can find more about contact allergy here: Skin rash due to allergy Another cause of a skin rash on the thigh is neurodermatitis. This hereditary disease leads to dry skin with eczema, which is mainly found on the side of the knee (i.e. the back of the knee). The thighs are often also affected.

Typically, both thighs are affected. Characteristic for these rashes are dry, very itchy and reddened eczema. On the inside of the thighs, redness and irritation can occur due to friction and perspiration, especially in overweight people.

This rash, known as “intertrigo”, occurs mainly in the skin folds due to the strong friction. The risk of fungal, viral or bacterial infections is also increased in overweight people. A so-called stasis dermatitis can also lead to skin rashes on the thighs.

Disrupted venous and lymphatic drainage, severe overweight and immobilization can lead to fluid congestion in the legs and associated skin rashes. The legs are typically reddened on one or both sides, sore, scaly and cracked. Eczema has a stocking-shaped spread and spreads from bottom to top.

More information about this can be found under: Eczema skin Another cause of a skin rash on the thigh is shingles (see shingles on the leg). This affects segment-like skin areas and usually occurs on one side. Small blisters on reddened skin and crusts are typical. The skin is very itchy or painful.
