Slipped disc | Exercises for back pain during pregnancy

Slipped disc

A slipped disc during pregnancy causes exactly the same problems as a non-pregnant person. However, due to the increased weight during pregnancy and the shifted body center of gravity, the symptoms can be much stronger than usual. The main symptom of a herniated disc in pregnancy is also the strong shooting pain, especially under stress.

Depending on the location of the herniated disc (cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine), the symptoms can vary. If the damaged intervertebral disc presses on a nerve root, this can lead to tingling, numbness or paralysis and may also impair the function of internal organs (shortness of breath, urinary or fecal incontinence). In pregnant women, the choice of medication is also very limited, so that the pain can be controlled purely by conservative therapy.

These include above all physiotherapy, heat and cold treatments and massages to relax tense muscles. If the herniated disc is in need of surgery due to severe limitations, it is considered a medical emergency and is operated on despite pregnancy. Minimally invasive procedures are then used to keep the strain on mother and child as low as possible. For the prevention of a herniated disc it is therefore advisable not to do without joint-gentle sports and gymnastics during pregnancy.

ISG Complaints

ISG complaints are also a common complaint during pregnancy. The sacroiliac joint, which connects the sacrum and ilium (it connects the pelvis with the lower part of the spine), is surrounded by a stable network of ligaments. If a joint blockage occurs, this can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms.

These include pain in the affected area, which can radiate into the leg, abdomen or groin. Other complaints include pain when moving around and sitting, as well as limited mobility and, in rare cases, restrictions in the functionality of the bowel.Contrary to the usual therapy for ISG complaints, pregnant women unfortunately cannot be helped by injections or the classic setting-in procedure to protect the unborn child. The therapy of ISG complaints is therefore mainly based on loosening and stretching exercises, movement and targeted massages to relieve the pain. For those affected, ISG complaints can therefore become a very tiresome affair.
