Small intestine bypass

Synonyms

Gastric reduction, gastroplasty, tubular stomach, Roux En Y bypass, small intestine bypass, biliopancreatic diversion according to SCOPINARO, billiopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, gastric balloon, gastric pacemaker.

Description

The small intestine bypass is considered obsolete today for stomach reduction and is mentioned here only for the sake of completeness. With this method the small intestine was shortened by a good piece. Either a piece of the small intestine was removed and the remaining piece was sutured to the end piece of the small intestine (ileum) (Jejuno-Illeal Bypass) or the remaining piece was sutured directly to the large intestine (colon) (Jejuno-Colic Bypass).

This technique should only lead to a reduced food intake (malabsorption). The side effects were considerable and some were fatal.
