Soybean oil is used as an excipient in medicinal products, for example, injectables, soft capsules, baths and semi-solid dosage forms.

Structure and properties

Refined soybean oil is a fatty oil obtained from the seeds of by extraction and subsequent purification. A suitable antioxidant may be added. Refined soybean oil exists as a clear, pale yellow liquid that is practically insoluble in water. The major fatty acids in the oil are linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, linolenic acid and stearic acid. Hydrogenated soybean oil (Soiae oleum hydrogenatum) is a purified, bleached, hydrogenated and deodorized soybean oil. It exists as a white mass or powder and is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Soybean oil has skin nourishing and lubricating properties. It belongs to the hardening (drying) fatty oils that become hard after being applied to a surface.

Fields of application

Soybean oil is used in pharmacy as an excipient, for example, to refat the skin, as a solvent for fat-soluble active ingredients, and for the delivery of calories (parenteral nutrition).
