Speech and Language Disorders: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of speech and language disorders.

Family history

  • Are there any disorders in your family that are common?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Did you learn to read and write in school?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • Do you have any problems with:
    • Reading?
    • Recognition (differentiable into auditory, visual, pragmatic, tactile, visual agnosia)?
    • Performing learned actions/movements?
    • Writing?
    • Calculate?
  • Do you find it difficult to name things correctly?
  • When did these symptoms first appear?
  • Have you experienced any changes in the intensity of these symptoms?
  • Besides these changes, have you noticed any other symptoms such as paralysis, headaches, dizziness, etc?
  • Asking questions about orientation (temporal, spatial).

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have vegetative processes such as thirst, appetite, urination, defecation changed?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (tumors, inflammation, cardiovascular disease; head injuries).

  • Radiotherapy
  • Allergies
  • Medication history
