Sport and Exercise in Winter: Excuses do Not Count

Lonely and forgotten they eke out their lives in these months: Jogging shoes, sports gear and pulse watches. Most of them have seen daylight for the last time in September. And many of their owners do not intend to look at them again until March. Sports and exercise have hardly any place in people’s consciousness at the moment.
After work it is dark, cold and often raining. In October, some people might still be thinking about their summer rounds through the park with a guilty conscience. But that was a long time ago. Now life without sports has become a habit.

Torture for the body

Despite sitting in the office for long periods of time, most people now look forward to watching TV, sitting on the sofa and above all: eating comfortably. This life is in the long run an ordeal for heart, muscles and joints. Only the fat pads come to life. Since no one needs to be surprised in the coming April, if the spring clothes no longer fit.

Use the opportunities of everyday life

The DAK recommends not to drop the topic of exercise completely now. Exercise is also a matter of habit. Starting again in spring is much more difficult if you don’t stay active now. Of course, no one should jog in the dark park.

But there are also many ways out of immobility in everyday life: forego the elevator in favor of the stairs, go to neighboring offices instead of calling them when you have questions for your colleagues, and get up from your chair as much as possible.

In addition, the lunch break is a perfect opportunity to get a little fresh air. A brisk walk – alone or with colleagues – gets the circulation going.

Weekend.

Plus, there are the weekends – when it’s light out. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can indulge in all the sports that were fun in the summer, too: Inlineskating, jogging, walking or cycling.

Endless possibilities

Even for the evenings during the week, there are so many ways to get active that there is no room left for excuses: The swimming pool is open, so is the fitness club and the tennis hall. And there are sports clubs everywhere with a huge range of activities on offer: Jazz dance, jazz gymnastics, yoga, Pilates, fitness gymnastics, stretching, aerobics, strength training, volleyball, handball, basketball, indoor field hockey, fistball, table tennis, badminton … the list is endless. And if you still haven’t found anything there, you can just take a dance class again!

Get off the sofa – it’s better together

Alone, it is often difficult to motivate to sports and exercise, especially when nature does not exactly lure you outside. Help can now a training partner. Why not ask a nice colleague to join in? Together you can play tennis or squash, go inline skating or just jogging. Even going to the gym will be more fun with two.

Don’t leave others hanging

Anyone who has ever played on a team knows that every man – and woman – counts here. For those who find it difficult to motivate themselves to exercise on dark evenings, team sports are particularly suitable. Because leaving the others hanging during training is out of the question for team players.

Another advantage of team sports is that like-minded people come together, and the joy of exercise is contagious. Regular team sports are more than just pure exercise.
