Sport for chronic tonsillitis
In general, regular sporting activities in a healthy condition can strengthen the immune system. However, if a person is ill, the additional stress caused by sport may be too much for the body’s immune system. One of the differences between chronic tonsillitis and the acute form is that the symptoms and complaints are not permanent but recurrent.
If the immune system, which has been weakened by the infection of the bacteria, is additionally stressed by sporting activity, the symptoms of chronic tonsillitis can become more severe. Therefore, before starting sports activities, if chronic tonsillitis is suspected, the elimination of the bacteria should be the main focus. A great danger of chronic tonsillitis are undesirable secondary diseases such as rheumatic fever and an accompanying bacterial endocarditis.
This is another reason why sport should be avoided. Sport puts additional strain on the heart, which can be very dangerous in the presence of bacterial endocarditis, which is easily overlooked due to its rather unspecific symptoms. Permanent damage to the heart valves can occur, whereby the old heart valves must be replaced by new ones.
In the case of symptoms of an existing chronic inflammation of the tonsils, sports should therefore never be practiced in view of the health risks. This is especially true if unspecific symptoms of rheumatic fever are perceived, such as joint pain, increased temperature, headaches, or an increased heartbeat. If chronic tonsillitis is suspected, medical care must be sought from a general practitioner or ear, nose and throat specialist and the available treatment options must be discussed with them. If no symptoms of chronic tonsillitis occur after antibacterial therapy with antibiotics and blood tests are negative for the presence of bacteria, light physical activity can be resumed. – Tonsils
