Sports

Strong physical exertion when lifting weights or during sports can increase the pressure in the abdominal cavity and the tension in the muscles to such an extent that pain is caused. A harmless umbilical hernia, in which there is no incarceration of the organ sections located in the hernial sac, can become problematic due to sports and excessive strain. In addition, sport increases the risk of such incarceration developing.

Nevertheless, a patient suffering from an umbilical hernia should not completely refrain from sports. Above all, the type and intensity of the physical strain is decisive. After a successfully performed umbilical hernia operation, physical activity should be kept low for the time being.Heavy lifting and sports are strictly prohibited, especially within the first days after the procedure.

Failure to observe this rule can lead to various complications: In addition, the entire result of the operation can be jeopardized by the practice of sports within the first days after the operation. For this reason, patients are advised to refrain from excessive physical exertion and especially sports until the skin sutures can be removed. This is usually the case after about ten to twelve days.

After the skin sutures have been removed, the patient may begin to do light sports. Ideally, there is a slow increase in exercise until the patient has regained his or her normal level. The performance of sports after an umbilical hernia operation should always be dependent on pain.

If no pain occurs during or after the sport, no overloading has occurred. If the patient feels pain (or other symptoms such as nausea) during physical exertion, the sport must be stopped immediately. It usually takes several weeks before an athlete is able to resume full physical activity after surgical correction of the umbilical hernia.
