Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Skin: Medical History

Medical history (history) is an important component in the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin (PEK).

Family history

  • Is there a frequent history of skin disease in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What skin changes have you noticed? Please describe them.
  • On which parts of the body did the skin changes occur?
  • Since when do these changes exist?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you regularly expose yourself to UV light? Do you frequently go to the solarium?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (skin disease; dyslipidemia/elevated triglycerides; chronic lymphocytic leukemia [risk factor for more aggressive disease progression]).
  • Surgery (organ transplant?) [risk factor for more aggressive disease course].
  • Radiotherapy
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history (chronic UV exposure; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), arsenic, tar, mineral oil, ionizing radiation, heat).
  • Medication history (long-term immunosuppression).
