Sulpiride is commercially available in the form of capsules and tablets (Dogmatil). It has been approved in many countries since 1976.

Structure and properties

Sulpiride (C15H23N3O4S, Mr = 341.4 g/mol) is a racemate. It exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It belongs to the substituted benzamides.

Effects

Sulpiride (ATC N05AL01) has antipsychotic, antidepressant, and antivertiginous properties. The effects are due to antagonism at dopamine D2 receptors. The half-life is approximately 7 to 8 hours.

Indications

  • Acute or chronic schizophrenic psychosis.
  • Severe behavioral disturbances associated with alcohol use and mental deficiency.
  • Neurotic conditions

In some countries also used for the treatment of vertigo and in depressive disorders.

Dosage

According to the professional information. Medicines are taken two to three times a day, regardless of meals. The last dose should be administered before 4 pm to prevent sleep disturbances.
