Summary | Abdominal pain on the right

Summary

Abdominal pain on the right side is a very unspecific and general symptom which can have numerous causes. In most cases it is a harmless disease, but life-threatening causes can also trigger this pain. For this reason an exact diagnosis of the abdominal pain by means of: is absolutely necessary.

Often a conventional therapy is sufficient. In some cases, however, a quick operation is the only possibility for treatment. Right-sided abdominal pain can have different causes.

Lower abdominal pain on the right side is in most cases caused by an inflammation of the appendix (appendicitis). Typical here is a painful feeling of pressure on the right side when pressure is applied to the left side. Furthermore, patients are only able to lift the right leg to a limited extent.

General symptoms such as nausea and vomiting also occur. In most cases the only treatment is the surgical removal of the appendix. In rare cases, inflammation of intestinal sacs (diverticulitis) can lead to pain in the right side of the abdomen (typically more on the left side).

In acute cases and in chronic inflammation, partial removal of the bowel must be considered. In mild cases antibiotic treatment is used. Upper abdominal pain on the right side can be caused by gallbladder stones or by inflammation of the gallbladder.

In most cases, the gall bladder is surgically removed as therapy. Sometimes ureteral stones occur, which settle in the ureter shortly before entering the bladder and can lead to pain on the right side. As therapy, an attempt can be made to salvage the kidney stones by means of a wire catheter. If this is unsuccessful, the ureter must be surgically opened and the ureteral calculi surgically removed. – Anamnesis (medical history)
