Summary

Gonarthrosis is a progressive clinical picture in which the articular cartilage in the knee joint is destroyed, resulting in bony changes in the joint. The causes of gonarthrosis are manifold. In addition to aging processes and genetic predisposition, various clinical pictures or obesity can also promote the development of gonarthrosis.

Gonarthrosis also results from incorrect loading, which can be caused by incorrect leg positions or excessive strain on the knee (sport, profession). Symptomatically, the clinical picture initially leads to pain during movement and later also at rest. The functionality of the knee is limited and stiffening can occur.

The diagnosis of gonarthrosis is made by the doctor after physical examination and on the basis of imaging procedures. Conservative and drug therapy is limited, in most cases surgical joint replacement becomes necessary from a certain point on.
