Summary | Muscle twitching – Physiotherapy

Summary

In summary, it can be said that muscle twitches, no matter on which part of the body, are sometimes extremely annoying for those affected, but are usually harmless. Stress and psychological strain are often the trigger for the twitching. Only if the twitching is very strong or persists over a longer period of time or recurs at regular intervals should a doctor be consulted.

In an individual patient consultation, the doctor can then determine the patient’s medical history and, together with diagnostic tools, find a cause for the muscle twitches. In most cases, patients then often feel that their quality of life is restricted by the unwanted muscle twitches, especially when whole muscles are affected by the contractions. In many cases, physiotherapy is then prescribed to reduce and control the twitches through specific exercises.

A trained physiotherapist will first determine the cause of the muscle twitches, if necessary in cooperation with the attending physician, in order to then treat them specifically. Depending on the cause, physiotherapy can then consist of stretching and tension exercises, massages, heat or cold therapy, ultrasound or electrical stimulation of certain trigger points.
