Summary | Pain with a birthmark

Summary

When a birthmark hurts, it can have different causes: In the rarest cases, however, it is cancer. In most cases the pain is of an inflammatory nature.

  • Mostly it is a matter of slight inflammations, which are caused by fine cracks in the skin.

These heal by themselves and do not require complex therapy.

  • Also an inflammation of the hair follicles can be the cause of the pain. In most cases, it is also sufficient to carefully clean the inflamed mole with a local antiseptic.
  • Larger inflammations such as boils and carbuncles may require antibiotics as therapy.
  • Finally, a malignant or potentially malignant change in the birthmark can also cause pain. The treating dermatologist will either remove these birthmarks or continue to monitor them to prevent cancer. If cancer is already present, a special therapy is performed, which may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
