Summary | Physiotherapy for a child with a torticollis

Summary

A child’s torticollis is usually muscular in origin. The most common affected muscle is the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Shortening and/or connective tissue remodelling can result in loss of mobility and the child’s head may be fixed in the typical torticollis position.

There are also other causes for a torticollis such as neurological diseases, diseases of the balance, hearing or visual apparatus and also tumors can be responsible for a torticollis. The therapy depends on the cause. In physiotherapy, stretching, activation and also the correct positioning of the child play an important role.Parents should be instructed to take appropriate measures at home. Osteopathic techniques are also well suited to treat the child’s torticollis.
