Summary | Physiotherapy for pain in the costal arch during pregnancy

Summary

During pregnancy, pain may occur at the costal arch, usually due to stretching of the abdominal muscles or overloading of the respiratory muscles. The relocation of the organs due to the growing uterus is also possible. In most cases the pain is unpleasant but harmless.

A clarification should be made to exclude complications. A doctor should be consulted urgently, especially in the case of right-sided pain, which is sometimes accompanied by nausea or diarrhoea. The pregnant woman can help herself with light exercises to loosen and relax the abdominal muscles, breathing exercises and exercises for straightening up. In physiotherapy, exercises are supplemented by soft tissue techniques such as massages, friction or fascial techniques.
