Summary | Physiotherapy for peroneal tendon inflammation

Summary

Inflammation of the peroneal tendons on the outer lower leg is usually due to overloading during sports. The therapy is oriented towards the wound healing phases, whereby the focus is initially on relieving and pausing the triggering sport, and later through active exercises to return to the old functionality and avoid recurrence. The wound healing process takes several weeks to months, since tendon tissue heals very slowly due to poor blood circulation.

Regeneration times should be observed, however, even when returning to sport later on, in order to avoid chronic inflammation. This can have serious consequences, such as loss of flexibility and further shortening of the entire muscle chain. With good cooperation, however, conservative therapy of peroneal tendon inflammation is usually successful.
