Summary | Shoulder joint arthrosis

Summary

Arthrosis of the acromioclavicular joint, the so-called acromioclavicular joint arthrosis, is a very common problem due to the great strain caused by sports, physical work or post-traumatic stress. Years of stress result in a narrowing of the joint space and the formation of new bony protrusions, causing the tendons and joint space to wear out over time. This leads to pain of varying degrees and can severely restrict mobility in the shoulder joint due to pain.

A physical examination and various imaging techniques can help to make a reliable diagnosis. However, the therapeutic options are very limited. For this reason, conventional therapeutic approaches such as injections of anti-inflammatory drugs and local anesthetics are first injected into the joint space. If this therapy does not bring sufficient relief, the joint space can be surgically enlarged.

Also the disturbing new bone formations are removed in the operation. However, if the tendons have already been affected by the friction, only a limited alleviation of the symptoms and restoration of functionality is possible.
