General measures
- Immediate mobilization (walking)
- Cooling and compression (the latter usually for 3 months).
- Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition by means of electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.
- BMI ≥ 25 → participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.
- Review of permanent medication due topossible impact on the existing disease.
Conventional non-surgical therapy methods
In the case of short-segment thrombophlebitis (phlebitis), local therapy can be performed. The following measures are used:
- Compression bandages (KV), medical compression stocking (MKS)/phlebological compression bandage (PKV).
- Cold wrap
- Alcohol wrap
- Creams/gels containing heparin
If thrombus (blood clot) is present, incision (surgical intervention) and thrombus expression should be performed.
In the presence of septic phlebitis, antibiotic therapy is performed.

Nutritional medicine
- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
- A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
- High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
- Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
- Diet rich in:
- Vitamins (vitamin C, E)
- Trace elements (selenium)
- Omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – at least once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel).
- Diet rich in:
- Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
