Surgery as a therapeutic option | Adhesions in the abdomen

Surgery as a therapeutic option

By means of an operation, which can usually be performed using the keyhole technique (minimally invasive), adhesions can be identified and at the same time released. It is the only way to safely remove adhesions. Due to the minimally invasive procedure, only small incisions are necessary, making this surgical procedure less traumatic than open surgery.

Only in rare cases is an open surgical procedure necessary to remove adhesions. During the operation, the surgeon takes a close look at the organs and the abdominal wall and looks for possible adhesions and tries to solve them completely. Such an operation is called adhesiolysis.

In rare cases, it may be necessary to remove part of the intestine. A renewed formation of adhesions after adhesiolysis is possible. Currently, there is no way to completely prevent the formation of possible adhesions.

There is no possibility to solve adhesions without a new operation with certainty. If one does not want to undergo another operation, there is the possibility to try other therapeutic methods, for example to relieve the pain. These include:

  • Heat Therapies
  • Physiotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Psychotherapy
  • Ostheopathy
  • Nutritional counseling (create a dietary protocol)
  • Multimodal pain therapy (uses the above mentioned points)

Prognosis

Adhesions can also reoccur after adhesiolysis, i.e. an operation in which the adhesions were removed. Sometimes there is also the case that the symptoms persist despite the removal of the adhesions.
