Surgery only for chronic anal fissure?

An operation in the area of the anus always involves certain risks and complete healing usually takes up to two months. Therefore, surgery should only be performed after weighing up the costs and benefits. As a rule, the indication, i.e. the reason for performing the operation, is a chronic anal fissure.

In this form of anal fissure, sufficient wound healing cannot be guaranteed by conservative methods such as creams and ointments. An acute anal fissure, on the other hand, should always first be treated by conservative, non-surgical methods. If there is any uncertainty about the prerequisites for a surgical intervention in an anal fissure, the treating physician should be consulted.

OP experiences

An anal fissure surgery is not one of the rarely performed surgeries, but it is rarely discussed due to the localization of the disease. For the surgical procedure, treatment in a specialized center is recommended, for example in a proctology practice or a clinic with a surgical department for proctology. Based on the doctor’s qualifications and experience reports of other patients who have already undergone surgery, the choice of the attending physician can be made. To avoid risks, any existing wound healing disorders should be clarified in advance.

OP Risks

The operation of an anal fissure, like any other operation, involves a few risks.

  • This includes, for example, post-bleeding, which means that there may be some bleeding again from the wound. Although this is unpleasant, it can usually be stopped by compresses.
  • Furthermore, wound healing can be impaired, so regular wound checks should be carried out.
  • Post-operative pain, i.e. pain occurring after the procedure, is not a risk in the true sense of the word, as it is a natural consequence of the procedure. However, they can be alleviated by appropriate measures.
  • Incision of the sphincter muscle often leads to fecal incontinence. In order to avoid this risk, such a surgical method is usually no longer performed.
