Symptoms after the meal

Food plays a role especially in esophagitis caused by gastric acid. The body registers an intake of food and the stomach starts producing acid to chemically break down the food. Many people are susceptible to excessive acid production when eating acidic foods.

Excess stomach acid can rise and come into contact with the lower esophagus. This causes heartburn. If this happens repeatedly, a manifest inflammation of the esophagus can develop.

It is important to change your eating habits. Foods that often cause problems are coffee and alcoholic beverages. Wine in particular can lead to acidic burping.

Frequent vomiting can also affect the entire esophagus. If coffee is drunk in the morning in addition to breakfast, the food can bind the acid and the symptoms disappear. If possible, carbonated water should also be replaced by still water.

Drinks that soothe the mucous membranes are mainly still water and teas, for example camomile tea. In addition to acidic drinks, fatty foods in particular can cause hyperacidity. As fat has the highest chemical calorific value of all food, it causes an enormous release of hydrochloric acid through the stomach. After the consumption of fatty foods, the symptoms can occur within a few minutes.

Esophagitis without heartburn

An inflammation of the esophagus without previous and accompanying heartburn indicates one of the rarer causes. In addition to bacterial, viral and parasitic causes of oesophagitis, thermal or mechanical irritation may also be present. In severe burns, the esophagus can become inflamed.

In particular, subsequent contact with liquid or food causes severe pain in the inflamed esophagus. A burn in the esophagus is almost always accompanied by burns in the upper neck and in the oral cavity. Mechanical causes of esophagitis are also conceivable. Swallowing sharp, hard or large objects can irritate or injure the mucous membrane of the esophagus. Small injuries to the mucous membrane also allow pathogens to enter, which in turn can cause inflammation.

Inflammation of the esophagus during pregnancy

Inflammation of the esophagus during pregnancy is not a rare problem. They are caused by the pregnancy. Due to changing hormone levels and increased pressure in the abdominal cavity, the lower sphincter muscle of the esophagus relaxes and an acid reflux can occur, which can cause inflammation.

Inflammation of the esophagus during pregnancy brings with it the problem that the pain and difficulty in swallowing can cause a lack of food. At the same time, drug therapies during pregnancy should be used with caution. Especially pregnant women need to change certain habits.

These include sleeping with a raised head at night or switching from bubbling to still water. Fat-rich and voluminous meals should also be avoided, as well as coffee and alcoholic beverages. If the symptoms persist, a drug therapy can be started with caution and consideration.
