Symptoms of a pinched nerve

If a nerve is pinched or irritated, the symptoms are caused by an impairment of its function. A basic distinction is made between nerve pathways that run from the brain to the muscles and convey commands such as leg movement, and those that run from individual body areas to the brain and convey information such as pain or touch. Different symptoms can therefore occur depending on what nerve or which parts of a nerve are disturbed in the event of an entrapment.

In the case of an incarcerated nerve at the hip, there is usually only an impairment in the transmission of information from the respective leg to the brain. In this case, for example, sensations such as tingling, numbness or “ant walking” occur on the thigh. In addition, a pinched nerve at the hip can also be very painful.

Typically, the character of the symptom pain is described as burning when a nerve is irritated. A possible pinching of a nerve at the hip can also be recognized by the fact that the pain is dependent on movement in the hip joint and becomes stronger or weaker depending on the position of the leg, or, for example, only occurs under stress such as when walking. A pinched nerve at the hip typically manifests itself through symptoms in the thigh. These can be burning pain on the one hand and on the other hand, sensations such as numbness or tingling. Since each nerve is responsible for the perception of information such as pain or touch for a limited area of the body, the symptoms are typically limited to that area.

In the case of the nerve that is most frequently affected by an incarceration at the hip, the complaints therefore occur on the outside of the thigh. In addition, the symptoms in the thigh are usually triggered mainly when walking. However, lying flat when the hip is stretched can also increase the symptoms. A flexion in the hip, on the other hand, often leads to a reduction of the symptoms in the thigh.
