Symptoms of a wound healing disorder on the tooth

Depending on its severity, a wound healing disorder in the area of the tooth can be extremely painful. Patients are typically free of symptoms for the first 1-3 days after the dental procedure. Afterwards, they develop pain, sometimes severe, within a short period of time.

They usually have a throbbing character in the area of the wound and often radiate into regions of the face, e.g. ears or temples. In contrast to a healthy wound healing, the wound remains “empty” or is filled with a greasy, sometimes foul-smelling mass. Adjacent lymph nodes, such as those in the neck, can be painfully enlarged. In the case of major wound healing disorders, patients even describe fever and general complaints such as tiredness, weakness or headaches.

The tooth is pressed into the inflamed tissue, which leads to strong pulling discomfort. If the wound healing disorder persists for a longer period of time, the tooth may start to loosen and become wobbly. It is noticeable that cool drinks and cold compresses lead to an alleviation of the symptoms and the pain disappears.

What to do in case of a wound healing disorder on the tooth?

Pronounced wound healing disorders must be treated in time. Possible therapies include antibiotics, either as tablets, ointment or mouthwash, disinfecting wound tamponades and, above all, adequate pain therapy. Superfluous mouth rinses not recommended by dentists should be avoided, as they often do more harm than good. Furthermore, it is recommended that general behavioral measures, such as physical protection, be observed. If there is no improvement in spite of these measures, a new dental procedure may have to be considered.
