Symptoms of eczema in the corner of the mouth

The typical symptoms of mouth eczema are inflammation of the skin with redness, irritation and pain. The inflammation is usually accompanied by cracks in the skin. These can be purely superficial and only affect the upper layers of the skin, but can also go deeper.

Many patients complain of pain when eating and especially when eating acidic foods (e.g. sweets), which cause a burning sensation in the corners of the mouth. A feeling of tension in the corner of the mouth when speaking and eating is also often reported. In this context, many patients complain that, especially after waking up, the cracks in the corner of the mouth open up during the first movements of the mouth and cause pain. In the case of an infection with Candida albicans (fungus), whitish coatings are often found in the area of the corner of the mouth and sometimes also inside the mouth.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of oral eczema is usually made clinically. Often the affected persons go to the doctor with clear complaints in the corner of the mouth.A detailed anamnesis with emphasis on the type and timing of symptoms can already lead the doctor to suspect eczema. An initial diagnosis can be made by examining the corners of the mouth and the skin for signs of inflammation, as well as for cracks and redness, in connection with the knowledge of certain behavioral patterns (e.g.

licking the corners of the mouth, chewing gum) or previous illnesses (e.g. dentition, autoimmune diseases) of the patient. In the further course of the treatment, smears can be taken to test for infections with fungi or bacteria. Already by a superficial examination small blisters could give an indication of a herpes infection or whitish coatings could give an indication of a candida infection (fungal infection). Furthermore, allergy tests can be performed to identify potential allergens.

The treatment of eczema in the corner of the mouth

For the treatment of a mouth corner eczema it applies that if there is an underlying disease (mentioned above) which favors the development of eczema, it should first be treated or eliminated. Zinc-containing pastes that support the healing of the skin are considered to be a first choice remedy. For the treatment of possibly involved fungi and bacteria, an antimycotic (fungicide) and/or an antibiotic is applied locally to the skin if necessary.

For short-term treatment for a few days, creams containing cortisone can be used. However, if this does not work, the therapy should be changed. After discontinuing the cortisone-containing cream, the problem may worsen in the meantime.

As a further component of the treatment, other habits such as licking the corners of the mouth or chewing on a ballpoint pen should be avoided, otherwise the effectiveness of the treatment with creams and the like is not guaranteed. If the corner of the mouth eczema is not a serious problem, treatment with simple remedies from the medicine chest can also be given. In general, eczema should be kept dry.

This can be achieved by regularly applying greasy creams to the area. If available, ideally a wound healing ointment (e.g. Bepanthen) can be applied. The fatty protective layer prevents liquid and saliva from reaching the eczema.

At best, the use of a wound healing ointment leads to faster healing of the injured skin. The use of fatty creams can also be used preventively. In winter, for example, this prevents the skin around the corners of the mouth from drying out, thus reducing the risk of developing corner of the mouth eczema.

In addition, a more balanced diet and, under certain circumstances, the additional intake of vitamins and trace elements as a supporting measure can improve the problem in the event of a vitamin deficiency. Many patients suffering from eczema report the supporting effect of black cumin oil. This natural remedy can be applied externally to the eczema or absorbed as an oil, e.g. when eating.

It is said to support the immune system and our body from the inside in healing eczema due to its richness of nutrients. From a medical point of view, there is nothing wrong with using black seed oil for eczema at the corner of the mouth, but if there is no improvement, a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible to exclude possible serious causes for the eczema. Homeopathy assumes that the development of eczema, or more generally the development of skin diseases, has a deeper underlying cause in another part of the organism, e.g. the intestine.

Therefore not only the symptomatic eczema should be treated, but also the original disease. If the origin is in the intestine, this can be done by changing the diet, among other things. Special attention should be paid to which foods aggravate the symptoms, and which foods may also help.

A variety of herbal and homeopathic remedies can be used for this purpose. Furthermore, a possible deficiency can be treated by taking vitamin, fatty acid and mineral preparations. To fight the symptomatic eczema on the skin, homeopathy offers a variety of approaches to treatment with ointments, pastes and creams – here the patient may have to find out by trial and error which way will help him best.

Another way for the external treatment of eczema is the therapy with own urine. In this case, the corresponding area on the skin, in this case the corner of the mouth, is rubbed with urine. The reason for this is the composition of the urine – it contains urea, as well as other substances that have possible healing and germicidal effects. The use of homeopathy is an alternative that should definitely be considered. However, treatment by a general practitioner, pediatrician or dermatologist should not be neglected. Instead, homeopathic treatment should be discussed and used as a continuative remedy.
