Symptoms of laryngitis

Introduction

Laryngitis is a disease of the larynx. It can show various symptoms. The symptoms depend on various factors.

For example, age and cause play a role. The symptoms differ, for example, between the acute and the chronic form. Laryngeal inflammation can be caused by viral and more rarely by bacterial infections, mechanical irritation, allergies and inhalation of toxic substances such as cigarette smoke.

Symptoms of laryngitis can also develop in the context of measles, mumps and chickenpox. The development of laryngitis is often associated with other inflammations of the upper airways. The paranasal sinuses are often affected.

Typical symptoms of laryngitis are

  • Disturbances of the voice sound such as : hoarseness changing occupied voice reduced resilience of the voice pitch becomes deeper voicelessness

In the context of a laryngitis, a limited ability to vibrate a vocal fold can lead to hoarseness. In extreme cases, an inflammation of the larynx can cause temporary loss of voice, a so-called aphonia. Hoarseness lasting more than 3 weeks must be clarified by a doctor.

Cough

Coughing can be a side effect of laryngitis. It is an expression of irritation of the larynx. In acute and chronic laryngitis, a dry irritated cough without sputum usually occurs. A distinction can be made between this and coughing in the so-called pseudocroup, a form of laryngitis in children. The cough is also dry in this context, but typically sounds barking.
