Symptoms of umbilical hernia in the baby

An umbilical hernia in babies is in most cases absolutely harmless and often regresses completely by the age of three without medical intervention. In addition, a baby usually has no symptoms in the presence of an umbilical hernia. There is no pain, nausea or vomiting.

Should the umbilical hernia be painful for the baby, there is a risk of incarceration of the organ sections in the hernial sac. There is a danger of death of these intestinal sections, since the blood supply is strongly limited. For this reason, a pediatrician should be consulted immediately in such a case.

If, however, there is redness and swelling of the navel, possibly also a purulent navel, this is more likely to indicate an inflammation of the baby’s navel. However, an inflammation of the belly button can occur in children, usually caused by the same pathogens as in babies. In both cases, the pediatrician should be consulted as soon as possible to avoid complications.
