Symptoms | Pain in the corner of the eye

Symptoms

In addition to pain in the corner of the eye, there may also be other complaints, depending on the cause. The inflammation of the eyelid is mainly characterized by redness and swelling. The conjunctivitis, for example, can manifest itself in a reddening in the area of the otherwise white-colored conjunctiva (conjunctiva).

In addition, strong tears and a burning or itching are typical symptoms. In the morning after getting up, those affected often notice a purulent conglutination of the eyelids. Small protrusions occur with hail or barley grains. Depending on their localization, these can be perceived as disturbing by those affected, as they cause the feeling of a foreign body in the eye.

Diagnosis

Especially the accompanying symptoms are often decisive for a diagnosis. If a doctor is consulted, he or she can often make a diagnosis and, if necessary, prescribe an appropriate therapy by simply inspecting the patient. Conjunctivitis is a classic example of this.

This is a very typical picture which can be recognized by a glance diagnosis. Also the hail or barley grain can already be diagnosed by the physician by exact inspection. An inflammation of the eyelid margin is usually diagnosed by a detailed patient survey in addition to the exact inspection. Thus the patient is asked about the care and cosmetic products used. For further diagnostics, a pathogen smear from the area of the eyelid margin can also be taken, whereby it should be noted that the pathogens found therein have rather little significance because they usually belong to the normal skin flora.

Therapy

Conjunctivitis often heals by itself. If the inflammation persists, treatment with an antibiotic medication, such as an antibiotic eye ointment or antibiotic eye drops, can help. Depending on the cause of the inflammation of the eyelid margin, treatment with medication may be necessary.

However, the most important aspect of treatment is regular hygiene of the eyelid margin. It should be performed two to three times a day. For this purpose, a clean cloth should be soaked in warm water and the eyelid margins should be dabbed by pulling them outwards.Sometimes cleaning with black tea can also have a disinfecting effect.

Regular and consistent treatment and cleaning is important. In the case of recurrent eyelid inflammation, a detailed examination should be carried out and a detailed patient interview should be conducted. Thus, certain cosmetics or also certain skin creams or lotions applied around the eye area can lead to an inflammation of the eyelid margins of the eye.

Very dry, cracked skin around the eye (dry skin eyes) can be treated with a moisturizer. If a skin disease is known to cause dryness at the corners of the eyes, a dermatologist should be consulted to find a suitable treatment. The treatment of a barley or hailstone is often not necessary, as these two conditions often heal on their own. If not, an antibiotic treatment with eye drops or eye ointments can be applied. In some cases, the barley or hailstone must be pricked by the dermatologist.
