Symptoms | Pain in the neck of the tooth

Symptoms

After drinking and eating there is a strong pulling pain. Especially if it is hot or cold food and drinks. Even cold air causes strong pain.

The neck of the tooth also reacts to sour or sweet food with pain. But also a touch, for example with a toothbrush, is felt painfully. Although the pain disappears again, it is triggered again with every new irritation.

Pain in the neck of the tooth is not unusual. In most cases the gums have receded due to various causes and now the neck of the tooth is exposed. Possible causes for a retraction of the gums can be stress-related grinding of the teeth at night, too much brushing, increasing age or an inflammation of the periodontium, the periodontal apparatus. The gums no longer offer protection to the underlying dentine of the tooth and the small tubules in the dentine, which are in contact with the dental pulp, are exposed.

The pulp is the medulla of the tooth, where nerves and blood vessels run. This is why pain often occurs mainly on contact with cold, hot, spicy or acidic foods. The stimuli pass through the tubules up to the tooth nerve and a pain is felt as sharp. In case of pain in the neck of the tooth, it is generally recommended to consult a dentist. If the pain in the neck of the tooth is caused by an inflammation of the periodontal apparatus, a so-called periodontitis, it must be treated immediately.

Summary

Pain in the neck of the tooth is the result of gum recession, which leads to an exposed neck of the tooth with open dentine tubules. Thermal, mechanical and chemical stimuli cause severe pain. Pressure can also cause such pain.

The therapy consists of the application of high-dose fluoride varnishes or gels, laser treatment or, if these measures do not lead to success, in fillings or inlays. The patient can support the dental measures by using suitable softer toothbrushes and controlled brushing.
