Symptoms | Physiotherapy for torn ligaments of the wrist

Symptoms

In case of a torn ligament, the following occurs: In most cases the activity cannot be continued. It should be cooled directly to avoid a large bleeding and to relieve the pain. The wrist should be immobilized and as long as the pain persists, it should be spared. If the wrist is not immobilized and protected sufficiently, this can lead to long-term discomfort and constantly recurring pain. Similar symptoms can occur in the following diseases:

  • To a direct shooting pain
  • Swelling (this article may interest you: Physiotherapy for swelling and nodules on the finge joints)
  • Discoloration
  • Restricted movement
  • Torn capsule on the hand
  • Torn muscle fibre
  • Muscle Strain

OP

Surgery for torn ligaments is performed depending on the degree of severity.Particularly in cases of instability of the wrist, surgical treatment is required, as secondary injuries are likely. The ligament is sutured with small screws and a small anaesthetic is usually sufficient. However, a plaster cast for 8 weeks is necessary in order not to influence the wound healing.

The wires are removed after months. The surgical procedure is most efficient if an operation is performed immediately after the tear-off. If the injury has already been in the past, there may be a shrinkage of the ligament or scarring.

  • Grade 1; a partial tear of the ligament but the wrist is stable
  • Grade 2; a partial tear and the wrist may lose stability through provocation
  • Grade 3; complete tearing of the ligament and instability of the joint

Rail

In order to immobilize the wrist, especially at the beginning, to avoid aggravation of the injury, the patient is given a wrist splint. This splint runs from the last third of the distal forearm to the middle of the hand and encloses the thumb saddle joint with a loop. Mobility is possible but limited in the splint so that not too much load is placed on the ligaments.

In general, it would also be important to protect the wrist despite the splint, which is usually not possible due to the work. Due to the injury and too early loading, it can develop into overload reactions. In the long term, arthrosis of the wrist is more likely, since inflammatory mediators are constantly being released when work continues with pain.

The splint is usually worn for 6-8 weeks. You want to read more about this topic? Then take a look at the pages listed here:
