Symptoms | Renander’s disease

Symptoms

Bone necroses are classified according to the affected joint or bone on the one hand and the cause on the other.

Therapy

The treatment of bone necrosis of the sesamoid bone depends on the severity and extent of the damaged bone material. In addition, there are different forms of bone necrosis, which must also be treated differently. In the initial stage, there is still the possibility of bone recovery.

Sufficient protection of the foot from strain by crutches is helpful here. At the same time, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can increase the oxygen content of the blood to improve the supply of damaged tissue. During this therapy, the patient inhales pure oxygen at a higher pressure for a certain period of time, whereby more oxygen is absorbed.

Drug therapy is also frequently used. Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen and anti-inflammatory drugs such as glucorticoids may be considered. These are often also medicines containing cortisone.

If the necrosis is already very advanced and the nearest joint is in danger of being affected, surgery is recommended. In this operation, the dead bone material is removed and possibly replaced by bone grafts. In the case of the sesamoid bone, removal of the bone part is a clean method to completely remove the necrosis and prevent it from spreading.

Healing

In the case of Renander’s disease, the chances of recovery are usually very good, since the sesamoid bone is an extremely small area affected by necrosis. In addition, the removal of the sesamoid bone is a comparatively minor operation. This often eliminates the danger of spreading or inflammation. Spontaneous healing without surgery is also possible. However, if larger bones or bone parts are affected by necrosis, the therapy turns out to be more complex and difficult.
