Tannin Buminate

Products

Tanninalbuminate is commercially available in Germany in the form of capsules and tablets (Tannalbin). In many countries, tannalbin is off the market and tanninal buminate is now only available in a combination preparation (Geli Stop). The active ingredient is also used as a veterinary drug.

Structure and properties

Tannin albuminate (tannin protein) is obtained from ovalbumin (egg white) and tannin by the action of heat. Tannin is a mixture of esters of glucose with gallic acid and 3-galloyl gallic acid. Tannin buminate exists as a light brown powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Tannin buminate (ATC A07XA01) has antidiarrheal properties. It is insoluble in the stomach and is released only in the intestine, where it exerts astringent (tanning, sealing) effects. We cannot comment on the actual clinical efficacy against diarrhea.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of acute, nonspecific diarrhea.

Contraindications

Tannin buminate is contraindicated in hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Tannin buminate may reduce the absorption of iron supplements and should not be administered concomitantly with them.

Adverse effects

Allergic reactions have rarely been observed.
