Taurolidine

Taurolidine is commercially available as an irrigation solution and instillation solution (Taurolin). It has been approved in many countries since 1981.

Structure and properties

Taurolidine (C₇H₁₆N₄O₄S₂, M_r = 284.4 g/mol) is a derivative of the aminosulfonic acid taurine.

Effects

Taurolidine (ATC B05CA05) is antimicrobial to bacteria, antifungal to fungi, and neutralizes endotoxins.

Indications

• For adjunctive treatment of peritonitis.
• Soft tissue and bone injuries.
• Pleural empyema (accumulation of pus within the pleura).

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity
• Terminal renal failure
• Children under 6 years

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include transient irritation and burning pain.
