Tazobactam is commercially available as a fixed combination with piperacillin as an injectable (Tazobac, generics). It has been approved in many countries since 1992. In 2016, a combination with ceftolozane was released (Zerbaxa).
Structure and properties
Tazobactam (C10H12N4O5S, Mr = 300.3 g/mol) is a triazolylmethylpenicillic acid sulfone present in drugs as tazobactam sodium.
Effects
Tazobactam (ATC J01CG02) inhibits beta-lactamases, enhancing the antibacterial properties of piperacillin.
Indications
Exclusively as a fixed combination with piperacillin for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases.
