Tenoxicam

Products

Tenoxicam is commercially available in the form of film-coated tablets (Tilcotil). It has been approved in many countries since 1986.

Structure and properties

Tenoxicam (C13H11N3O4S2, Mr = 337.4 g/mol) belongs to the oxicams and is a thienothiazine derivative. It exists as a yellow crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. Lornoxicam (Xefo) is a chlorinated derivative of tenoxicam.

Effects

Tenoxicam (ATC M01AC02) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin synthesis. Tenoxicam is not selective for COX-2, and it has a long half-life of up to 72 hours, so it can be administered once daily.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of painful inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system, for example, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Tablets are taken once daily at the same time of day with or after a meal.

Contraindications

Numerous precautions and possible drug interactions must be observed during use. Full details can be found in the drug label.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include stomach pain, stomach burning, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, rash, dizziness, and headache. As with all NSAIDs, serious side effects such as gastric bleeding and gastrointestinal ulcers are rarely possible.
