Terpineol is commercially available as a gel, fluid and spray (as a component of Perskindol classic), among others.

Structure and properties

α-Terpineol (C10H18O, Mr = 154.25 g/mol) is a monoterpene alcohol found in numerous essential oils. It exists as a colorless solid that is sparingly soluble in water. By terpineol is usually meant α-terpineol. The melting point is 33 °C.

Effects

Terpineol has vasodilating and warming properties.

Indications for use

  • Medical indications include muscle and joint pain, back pain, bruises and sprains.
  • Terpineol is also used as a fragrance, for example, for personal care products.

Dosage

According to the professional information. The drugs are applied externally. Hands should be washed after application.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions. Pure terpineol must be handled according to the precautions in the Material Safety Data Sheet. It may cause skin irritation and severe eye irritation if used improperly.
