Testicular Swelling: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of testicular swelling.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the swelling of the testis been present?
  • Did the swelling occur acutely* and with severe pain? * If acute swelling of the testicle occurs with or without pain in the scrotum, often radiating to the groin, immediate presentation to a urologist is urgent!
  • Are both testicles equally swollen?
  • Is the scrotum reddened, swollen?* .
  • Do the testicles hurt when pressure is applied* ?
  • Are the testicles overheated?
  • Do you remember a triggering event?
  • What other symptoms did you notice, e.g., swelling in the groin, fever, etc.?
