Tetracaine (Eye Drops)

Products

Tetracaine is commercially available in the form of eye drops (Tetracaine). It has been approved in many countries since 1987.

Structure and properties

Tetracaine (C15H24N2O2, Mr = 264.4 g/mol) is present in drugs as tetracaine hydrochloride, a white, crystalline, and slightly hygroscopic powder that is readily soluble in water. It belongs to the ester-type local anesthetics and is also known as amethocaine.

Effects

Tetracaine (ATC S01HA03) has local anesthetic properties. Effects occur rapidly and last for at least 15 minutes. Effects disappear within 20 to 60 minutes.

For local anesthesia in ophthalmology.

Dosage

According to the professional information. Usually one drop is administered.

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions are possible with succinylcholine, sympathomimetics, sulfonamides, and beta-blockers.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as irritation and burning. Systemic side effects cannot be ruled out. Corneal damage may occur with prolonged and improper use.
