Tetramethrin is included in some insect sprays and wasp sprays in many countries. It is often combined with other insecticides. Medicines containing tetramethrin are not commercially available.

Structure and properties

Tetramethrin (C19H25NO4, Mr = 331.4 g/mol) is a dioxotetrahydroisoindole derivative and belongs to the type I pyrethroids. These are synthetically produced, chemically more stable derivatives of the pyrethrins naturally occurring in certain chrysanthemums (, Dalmatian insect flower). Tetramethrin is a mixture of 4 stereoisomers, some of which are marketed individually.

Effects

Tetramethrin (ATC P03BA04) is an insecticide with a broad spectrum of activity. It is used against wasps, hornets, blind flies, bees, ants, flies, ticks, fleas, cockroaches, and spiders, among others. The effect occurs quickly. Tetramethrin is a nervous system, which attacks sodium channels of nerve cells.
