The accompanying symptoms

In many cases, pain in the buttock does not occur alone. Often, when walking or even at rest, pain shoots from the buttock into the leg up to the foot. This typical constellation is found when nerves originating from the lower spinal cord are irritated in some way.

A possible cause of pain from the buttocks to the leg is a slipped disc in the lumbar spine. In this case, the intervertebral disc presses on the nerves, which are then excessively irritated and cause pain. However, in many cases another cause is the cause of the suffering: this includes sciatica, an irritation of the sciatic nerve.

Here, it is not an intervertebral disc but a tense muscle at the height of the hip, the piriformis muscle, which is responsible for the pain all the way down to the leg. Often, incorrect movements and excessive strain are the cause of the pain. A doctor can find out which of the causes are present by performing various movement maneuvers in the leg and hip joint, or at least narrow them down.

The treatment of pain from the buttocks to the leg is in most cases characterized by gymnastics and relaxing exercises. Well-known painkillers can be used against the acute pain. If the pain extends from the cheek to the foot, it is often a so-called sciatica.

This usually manifests itself as a stabbing pain that extends from the hip to the buttocks and into the leg and foot. Often the pain is accompanied by numbness or tingling in the area. It is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve.

This can be caused by slipped vertebrae, disc protrusions, a herniated disc, a narrowing of the spinal canal or by bleeding or tumors. In addition to the pain in one cheek, a pain extending into the thigh is often described. This can be an indication of various problems. On the one hand, pain occurs from the buttock to the thigh when the sciatic nerve is irritated, sometimes the pain goes even further down.

Another cause is a tension of the gluteal muscles. If there is overloading or incorrect loading and thus tension, pain occurs mainly on the back of the thigh. This can occur after long car journeys and other sedentary activities without much variation.

An irritation of the sciatica causes similar symptoms. Another cause of pain that starts at the buttock and radiates into the thigh is wear and tear of the hip (coxarthrosis) with the following malpositions. Due to this malposition, the muscles have to work under unusual loads and can cramp.

This problem is particularly common in older people over 50 years of age. In this case, the pain is particularly pronounced at the sides. The tension can be treated well with massages, heat treatment and gymnastic exercises to relax the muscles.

Pain in the buttocks is often caused by diseases of the spine. In addition, pain that occurs directly in the area of the buttocks is often mistakenly perceived by many of the affected patients as a back pain. Excessive strain on the gluteal muscles is the main cause of pain in the cheek, which can radiate into the back.

Muscle strains and bruises can be observed particularly frequently in the area of the buttocks. In addition, a simple muscle ache can cause pain in the cheek and lower back area in many patients. Dysfunctions of the holding organs are also among the most common reasons for the development of such symptoms.

In this context, a distinction must be made between various forms of functional disorders. For example, tense muscles or tendons can lead to so-called “myofascial pain”. In particular, people who have pronounced postural defects or repeatedly perform monotonous movements often suffer from myofascial pain in the buttocks and lower back.
