The causes in the baby

In general, all possible causes of a rash in the elbow in adults also apply to babies. For example, such a rash can often be the first manifestation of neurodermatitis. Babies also develop more and more rashes while they are teething, which can be in the area of the crook of the elbow, among other things.

The causes in the child

The causes of an elbow rash in children are usually the same as in adults. A skin rash is often the first manifestation of neurodermatitis. By playing outdoors, children are also exposed to a higher risk of tick bites, through which Borrelia bacteria, the pathogens causing Lyme disease, can be transmitted.

The accompanying symptoms

The rash in the crook of the arm is often accompanied by itching. Other possible accompanying symptoms are pain and scaling of the skin. If the mucous membranes are also affected by a rash, this is known as enanthema.

If general symptoms such as fever, fatigue, coughing or swelling of the lymph nodes also develop in the course of the rash, an infectious cause is more likely to be present and consultation with a doctor is recommended. The itching in the context of a rash is triggered by so-called mediators. These are messenger substances that are released from the skin cells as a result of an inflammatory process or by taking certain foods or drugs.

Although itching is more likely to be a non-specific symptom, which can, but need not, occur with any type of skin rash, it is a very common symptom. However, it can be stated that the occurrence of itching is more likely to indicate an infectious disease, such as chickenpox, scarlet fever or the presence of psoriasis or even neurodermatitis. The absence of itching is typical for some rash causes.

One of these is measles, which is usually manifested by an itchless rash on the face and the mucous membrane of the mouth that spreads throughout the body. Also the rash caused by Lyme disease is usually not accompanied by itching and shows a characteristic ring-shaped redness with central pallor. If the skin rash is caused by a fungal infection, itching is not usually present. Itching may also be absent in the case of a rash caused by certain drugs.
