The correct care of a dental implant

The correct care of a dental implant is especially important to guarantee a long durability. Different implant systems and their construction require different care. In contrast to a dental implant, the own tooth has its own special anchoring mechanism in the bone and a higher body’s own defence.

Although implants cannot cause caries, they are susceptible to periodontal disease. Periodontal diseases of the implant, the so-called peri-implantitis, must therefore be prevented at all costs. Peri-implantitis can lead to bone loss and inflammation, which can later lead to implant loss.

What to consider when brushing your teeth

Between the dental implant and the gums, germs can penetrate better because the gums around the dental implant are very loose and germs can penetrate faster and cause inflammation. In order not to injure the surrounding gums, a soft toothbrush with rounded bristles should be used. The toothbrush should be placed at a 45° angle so that the bristles can reach the connection between the gums and the crown of the tooth.

In addition, it is important to ensure that the pressure is not too strong in order not to displace or injure the gums. Thorough cleaning of the interdental spaces is also particularly important for implant care. Cleaning with a toothbrush alone will only reach the outer surfaces of the tooth crowns, therefore an additional cleaning of the interdental spaces is necessary.

This can be done with dental floss or interdental brushes. A normal toothpaste is sufficient for cleaning the dental implants. It should not contain high amounts of tensides or abrasive cleaning agents, as is the case with whitening toothpastes.

Should I use an electric or manual toothbrush?

With an electric toothbrush, the correct brushing movement is already integrated, but good cleaning of the teeth and the dental implant is only possible with the correct tooth brushing technique. With the right technique, it is also possible to use a manual toothbrush. Nevertheless, there are always investigations and studies on this topic. Meanwhile it has been proven by scientific research that tooth cleaning with an electric toothbrush is much more effective. Especially ultrasonic toothbrushes are recommended.
