The duration | The paraplegic syndrome

The duration

The paraplegic syndrome is not yet curable. In rare cases it comes to a spontaneous cure. Normally, however, patients bear the consequences of the spinal cord damage throughout their lives and are dependent on a wheelchair.

The prognosis

Paraplegia shows a poor prognosis. In many cases, an incomplete paraplegic syndrome also turns into a complete one. In some cases a partial remission is possible if there is a decrease in motor paralysis within the first days.

Nerve cells can no longer divide and remain damaged forever after an injury, which means that paraplegia is not considered curable. In recent years, however, promising studies with stem cells and new drugs have been conducted, which give hope that the disease can be cured one day. So far, however, none of these methods has led to a cure for paraplegia.
