The Right Glasses At the Computer Workstation

If your back hurts, your head hums and your eyes water when you work at a computer screen, it may be due to the wrong glasses. Glasses with special lenses adapted to the computer screen workplace can alleviate discomfort in numerous situations. 40 percent of all people who sit in front of a computer for more than three hours a day complain of visual complaints: dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches and sensitivity to light. And this is despite the fact that many computer workers already wear glasses. Nevertheless, health problems can occur if the eyes or everyday glasses are not up to the demands of VDU work.

Problems of reading glasses and varifocals

Reading glasses correct vision only for the immediate reading area at a distance of about 40 to 50 centimeters, and the screen is already too far away at about 80 centimeters. People who wear reading glasses or have an undetected or incorrectly corrected refractive error often sit hunched forward, otherwise they can no longer decipher the writing on the screen.

Wearers of varifocals also have their problems. Conventional varifocals do correct the viewing distance of about 70 centimeters, which is important for screen work, but only in a narrow part of the lens. In order to read the writing on the screen through the central area of the varifocals, the screen worker has to lift his head and lean forward. The posture is involuntarily cramped and rigid, causing tension in the cervical spine.

Advantages of VDU workstation glasses

Remedy promises a pair of glasses with screen workstation lenses. Compared to reading and varifocals, these have a wide central field of vision, so that the eyes always see sharply even when switching between the keyboard, screen and the colleague at the neighboring table – and always in a relaxed and thus orthopedically correct sitting posture. Part of the cost of VDU workplace glasses is even covered by the employer in some cases, if this is necessary for health reasons.

In addition to the recommended regular breaks, special relaxation exercises also help when the eyes are very strained. Wellness for the eyes is to look into the green for some time – the park next door or a treetop outside the window are pure relaxation for the strained eyes.

Regularly and consciously closing the eyes for a few seconds also helps: this re-moistens the eyes well. Studies have shown that the frequency of the blink decreases due to the constant concentrated gaze on the monitor and thus the cornea is no longer kept sufficiently moist.
